Self-taught photographer, Barron Claiborne, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He began practicing photography when his mother gifted him a camera at 10 years old. Since then he has used toy cameras, pin-hole cameras, and even handmade cameras in his work. In 1989, Claiborne relocated to New York City to work as an assistant in various photography studios, including those of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. His most significant mentor was the American photographer, Gordon Parks. Claiborne’s work has crossed the boundaries of art, fashion, music, and film. His images have been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Interview.

In 2012, Claiborne co-directed a docuseries with Afropunk Pictures called “The Triptych” which profiled Kenyan contemporary artist Wangechi Mutu. The most notorious of his works, King of New York (1997), a portrait of American rapper Notorious B.I.G., shaped hip hop aesthetics. Barron Claiborne is represented by Todd Merrill Studio; his work resides in the permanent collections of institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art, Brooklyn.
