Francis Luis Mora was born in 1874 in Uruguay and moved to the United States as a child. He received his first artistic training from his father, well-known Spanish sculptor Domingo Mora before going on to study at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and later at the Art Students League in New York. Mora eventually traveled to Europe to study the Old Masters, and was especially influenced by Diego Velazquez. He was a successful muralist, illustrator, portraitist and painter, whose work combined the influence of the Spanish Masters with American Modernism. Mora taught at the Art Students League, the Grand Central School of Art and the New York School of Art, and his work resides in many prominent institutions, including: the Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Academy of Design, New York; National Gallery of Canada; Newark Museum, New Jersey; Oakland Museum, California; Toledo Museum, Ohio
and The White House, Washington, D. C.
