Item Details

Fremont F. Ellis (American, 1897 – 1985)
Untitled (barnyard), late 20th century
Watercolor painting on paper
Signed to lower right

Fremont Ellis was born in Virginia City, Montana and grew up without a formal education. He was a self-taught artist for the entirety of his life except for a three month period at the ASL in NYC. Ellis earned a reputation as a New Mexico painter of site-specific landscapes that conveyed his intense emotions for the rich coloration of the Southwest. Ellis was influenced by American Impressionism but was never considered a modern painter, tending towards a realistic style with his own uniquely tinted palette. He used a camera using different lenses to document sites and then used the color shifts to paint his work.
