This photograph by John Divola is from the artist’s The Supermarket Series, for which he photographed women shopping in supermarkets around the San Fernando Valley, where he spent his childhood. The series was published in his book Supermarket(2013).

Celebrated photographer John Divola was born in Los Angeles and received his B.A. from California State University, Northridge and his M.F.A. from UCLA. He is particularly known for exploring the limitations and conceptions of photography, often challenging the boundaries between the abstract and specific. Throughout his career, Divola has received several awards such as the Individual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has published several books and his work has been collected and exhibited by many prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Photography among others.
