Joseph Ropes was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1812. Primarily working as a topographical draughtsmen, Ropes did not become an artist until his mid-30s, when he enrolled at the National Academy of Design. From there, he moved to New York and then to Hartford, Connecticut. In Hartford, Ropes ran a private studio from 1851 to 1865. As a draughtsmen he was introduced to landscape painting, then evolved further to figural art. Ropes solidified his career as a teacher and author of artist manuals. He traveled continuously throughout his life until settling in New York, where he passed in 1885.

- backing removed to examine the verso; examined under UV light; canvas relined; areas of overpainting particularly to the left; craquelure throughout; chips to the molding of the frame.
