Bruce Beasley Large-Scale Granite Sculpture "Stone Horizon," 2000

Item Details

Bruce Beasley (American, born 1939)
Stone Horizon, 2000
Carved granite sculpture
Signed and dated to lower edge on verso
Editioned 3/9

Regarded as a perfectionist, Bruce Beasley is known for his monumental sculptures, many of which incorporate both cubic and organic forms. For Beasley, shape and form are his territory and the language through which he communicates. His sculptures are designed on a computer model which allows him to move and rotate his forms until his desired composition is discovered. Aside from granite, Beasley has worked in a variety of mediums such as acrylic, bronze, and other metals. In this particular work, titled Stone Horizon, he creates a sense of movement with a central assemblage of cubic forms that is balanced with a long horizontal slab, resulting in a monumental bench-like structure.

Bruce Beasley attended Dartmouth College and the University of California, Berkley. In 1960, he was discovered by the curator of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and his work was shown in an assemblage of rather good company including Jasper Johns, Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg, and Willem de Kooning. At the age of twenty-two, Beasley was the youngest artist to have work accepted in the museum’s permanent collection. To date, Bruce Beasley’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions, including the Guggenheim, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris among many others.
