Frank Vincent DuMond was born in 1865 in Rochester, NY. With an early appreciation for drawing, DuMond chose to attend the Art Students League of New York in 1884. To finance his coursework, DuMond took on side jobs as illustrator for publications such as New York’s Daily Graphics. After completing his studies in 1888, DuMond moved to Paris to attend Académie Julian. While he favored the styles of Art Nouveau at this time, DuMond reached Paris at the end of the height of the Barbizon School, introducing him to the newly found appreciation for local landscape and plein air painting that had just been established in France. It was this experience, that instilled in him the educational foundation he would bring back to the United States. DuMond’s previous illustrative work for Daily Graphics brought him the attention of Harper’s Weekly. The editor of Harper’s Weekly who was also the president of the Art Students League of New York encouraged DuMond to take on a teaching position which he would hold for the next five decades. Between working as an illustrator, teaching in New York, and taking his students on educational trips to Europe, DuMond developed the Prismatic Palette as a teaching aid for landscape painting which taught the progression of light in colors. DuMond created a legacy for art education as a teacher of generations of notable artists including Norman Rockwell and Georgia O’Keefe. His career as illustrator was just as significant; the most noteworthy being his work for Mark Twain’s Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte (1896). DuMond is one of the most highly regarded artist-educators of American art history. His work is held in many private collections, as well as the permanent collections of the Florence Griswold Museum, Connecticut and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
