Born in Den Haag, Holland in 1886, Willem van den Berg followed in the footsteps of his father, Andries van den Berg, as an artist. He studied in Belgium and in Paris, becoming a student of the Barbizon school of painting while in France.
His oeuvre includes still-lifes and figural paintings as well as portraits and landscapes, although he is best known for his images of peasants, farmers and fishermen.
In 1935, van den Berg exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago before becoming the director of the National Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1940. He continued to paint and exhibit internationally throughout his career. his paintings are held in many museum collections in Holland, Europe and the United States.
