Untitled (portrait), 1884
Oil painting on panel

Eugene von Blaas, also known as Eugene de Blaas, was born in Italy in 1843 to an Italian mother and Austrian father. Von Blaas’ father, Karl von Blaas, was an acclaimed artist across Europe who received many commissions for churches in Austria, Italy, England, France, Hungary and Russia, including a commission by Pope Pius IX. Eugene von Blaas was taught by his father as they traveled throughout Europe. While von Blaas’ father was a professor in Vienna, he received a teaching position at l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. From 1856 to 1866, the von Blaas family lived in Venice, where Eugene von Blaas established himself as a prolific artist, later to succeed his own father’s artistic reputation. By this point in time, Venice had become one of the main destinations on the Grand Tour, and visitors created a market for memorabilia paintings depicting Venetian society and life by the canals. Eugene von Blaas became a pioneer of this Venetian genre, also painting portraits and religious narratives. His work was especially popular in Britain, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Fine Art, London; Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery, London; and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
