New York-based photographer and filmmaker Khalik Allah first developed an avid interest in photography when he borrowed a camera from his father to photograph members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Known for his visceral depictions of humanity and daring portraiture, Allah’s work has been repeatedly described as “street opera.’ Some of his major projects include photographing and filming people on the corner of 125th and Lexington Avenue in Harlem, much of which became the content of his first book Souls Against Concrete, published in 2017 by the University of Texas Press. In 2018, his award-winning film Black Mother was released. Regarded as “a spiritual journey through Jamaica”, this film has been viewed at museums, festivals, and other institutions since its release. Allah became a Magnum Nominee in 2020 and continues to photograph and film today.
