Shepherd was born in England but spent time in France until 1793 at the outbreak of the Great French War. He was awarded a silver palette by the Society of Arts in 1803 and 1804. He was also one of the founding members of the resurrected New Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1831.

- toning with concentrated discoloration to the lower right and ghost transfer image of fish to the left; dried glue to the edges of sheet; nicks to the frame.
