A 20th century watercolor on paper by highly-regarded Cincinnati artist, Robert Fabe (1917–2004). The female portrait depicts a woman with brown hair created with soft strokes of brown and grey; posing against a counter in casual dress. The work is signed to the lower right and presented in a textured gilt frame with bright white matting. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.

Robert Fabe was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1917. At a very young age, he and his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. His father, also a talented artist, encouraged Fabe at the age of seven to pursue his passion. As a notable young artist, Fabe graduated from Withrow High School and received a two year scholarship to attend the Art Academy of Cincinnati. In the late 1930s, he received a scholarship to the Art Student’s League in New York City. Soon after, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for five years. Discharged in 1958, Fabe began teaching at the University of Cincinnati in the College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning where he stayed until 1987.
