It is believed that Ogilby painted this work while studying under Kenneth Stubbs (1907 – 1967) at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.
Born in Maryland, Elizabeth Ogilby was an American Modernist painter known for her figural works. She received a degree in sociology from Sweet Briar College in 1934. However, it was two years later that Ogilby discovered her passion for art while taking classes at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, under the tutelage of Eugen Weisz and Kenneth Stubbs. During the early 1940s, Ogilby produced her best oil paintings while working at a studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She focused on her family life during the 1940s and 1950s. After that reprieve, Ogilby returned to art in the late 1960s with black-and-white drawings using lithographic crayon. She was active with the Maryland Federation of the Arts and exhibited in many shows including National Arts Club, New York, Brandeis Art Exhibition, Maryland General Assembly Art Exhibition and more.
