Grant Haist was a lifelong “Kodak man” internationally recognized as both a technical expert and an award-winning photographer. He had a keen sense of framing western landscapes, botanical imagery, and scenes from everyday American life. After graduating from Michigan State with Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry and serving in the Second World War, he moved to Rochester, New York, and began working for the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories. During the span of his 32-year career with Kodak as a Senior Research Associate, Haist became known as “the man who modernized the process to develop photos.’ He held 28 U.S. patents for innovations at Kodak and published the classic two-volume manual: Modern Photographic Processing in 1979 as well as George Eastman’s Cameras and the Men Who Made Them in 2011.

After retiring from Kodak, Haist traveled extensively, all the while capturing the majesty of the American West, Canada, New York, New England, Michigan, and Florida. As a member of the Kodak Camera Club and the Photographic Society of America, his work was exhibited on a regular basis at international exhibitions and U.S. state fairs. His remarkable images are highly coveted for their technical aesthetics and the clear focus on texture, expression, and contrasting tone.
