Poliakoff was a Russian-born French artist and musician, who is considered one of the most important artists of the Tachisme art movement. He started his artistic studies at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. However, Poliakoff hastily left Russia in 1918 and toured Constantinople Sofia, Vienna, and Berlin as a musician in Russian cabarets. Eventually, he settled in Paris in 1923 and enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière by 1929. Poliakoff’s early oeuvre continued to be academic until he traveled to London in the mid 1930s and met abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Otto Freundlich, and others. Influenced by these Ecole de Paris artists, Poliakoff entered his mature style of Modernism and Lyrical Abstraction. The Venice Biennial dedicated an entire room to the artist’s work in 1962 and many well-established institutions collect and display his paintings.
