An original oil on canvas by listed Cincinnati artist Reginald Grooms (1900-1989) titled Water Carriers. The artist utilizes a saturated palette ranging from deep red to vibrant orange, with a wide range of green tones to build the thick vegetation. Three women are seen to the center of the piece, two carrying large containers of water atop their heads, while the third appears to carry a white and gold metal frame. A male figure is seen working among the long, drooping fronds of the abundant palm trees in the scene, as two women converse near a hut to the upper left. Signed in paint to lower right, this work is housed in a dark bronze, ribbed frame with hanging wire present to verso.
Reginald Grooms was a painter, watercolorist, lithographer and teacher. His students include many prominent and listed Cincinnati artists. The son of a wood engraver, Grooms took up watercolors and oils as a childhood hobby. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and in 1923 he went to Paris to study painting at the Académie Julian. While in Paris he exhibited in the Spring Salons of both 1924 and 1925. In 1925, Grooms returned to Cincinnati to teach at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati School of Applied Arts. Grooms had numerous solo exhibitions throughout his life including at the Closson Gallery, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Art Club, Charles Morgan Gallery in New York, and University of Kansas Museum.

- abrasions and scratches to the frame; paint chipping and scratches throughout; stains to the surface; minor warping of the canvas; examined under UV light, minimal inpainting present; several punctures to the center left and upper left corner, measures approximately 0.5" W x 0.5".
