After serving in the United States Navy, Grachis studied at the California School of Fine Arts on a G.I. bill during the late 1950s. When the funds were depleted, he opened a small art gallery in San Francisco, focused on up and coming artists. He is considered to be one of the first artists from Northern California to explore the minimalist style and geometric abstraction.
