Photographer Dennis Stock is especially known for his iconic portraits of Hollywood celebrities, those of James Dean. Born in New York City, he was an apprentice to Life magazine photographer Gjon Mili before joining Magnum in 1951. From 1957 to 1960, Stock shot a series of portraits of jazz musicians for his book Jazz Street, which included images of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Gene Krupa and Duke Ellington. Eight years later he created the film production company Visual Objectives for which he shot several documentaries. In the late 1960s, Stock shifted his subject matter toward California hippies and captured their ideals of loving and caring during the revolutionary era. He served as Magnum’s President of the film and new media division for a year in 1969. Throughout his career, Stock published several books and his work has been collected by multiple renowned museums.
