Born in Philadelphia, Nash was raised in Detroit and found early success as a commercial artist after studying with John Palmer Wicker. By 1920, he relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and became involved with the Modernist movement. During the 1930s, Nash worked with the Works Progress Administrations, completing a mural for the University of New Mexico. He later secured a teaching post in Los Angeles. Nash was often known as the “American Cézanne.” Many of his fauvist-inspired landscapes are held in the permanent collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, and others.
