Contemporary artist Elsie Kay Harris specializes in vibrant abstract landscape paintings portrayed with broad gestural brushstrokes and Post-Impressionistic elements. She also creates figural and landscape sculptures that exhibit similar abstractions. Born in West Virginia Appalachia, Harris draws her inspiration from the deep crevice valleys, mountains, and the soft hills throughout the region. She begins her creative process by drawing sketches of her chosen subjects, which serve as studies for her expressive paintings that capture the tranquility and joyfulness she feels when viewing those sites.

Throughout her career, Harris has exhibited her work extensively in juried and invitational exhibitions; her work can also be found in many private and public collections throughout the United States and abroad. She has designed and produced large-scale murals, ballet and stage productions, and has worked as a graphic artist for Kentucky Educational Television. Harris has been deeply involved in her regional art community, working as the Visual Arts Gallery Director and the Media Liaison for the Lexington Council of Art, now LexArts. A number of other positions she has held include Gallery Director, Membership Chairman and President of the Lexington Art League, and a representative for the Visual Artists in the Craft Market program for the Kentucky Arts Council. Harris is currently retired but continues to create sculptures.
