John E. Weis Watercolor Painting of Street Scene

Item Details

John Ellsworth Weis (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1892–1962)
Untitled (street scene), mid-20th century
Watercolor painting on paper
Signed to the lower right
(n0687)

Born in Indiana, John Weis moved to Higginsport, Ohio, then to Norwood, Ohio when he was a child. Due to family struggles, he found it necessary to work several day jobs in order to attend classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the evenings. Faculty members at the Academy, including Frank Duveneck, James Hopkins, L.H. Meakin, and Herman Wessel, were so impressed with both Weis’ talent and his work ethic, that at the age of 22 he was offered a full-time position at the Academy where he taught for the next 38 years, mentoring many young artists in Cincinnati. Weis’ work was exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other institutions.
