After serving in the United States Navy, Grachis studied at the California School of Fine Arts on a G.I. bill during the late 1950s. When the funds were depleted, he opened a small art gallery in San Francisco, focused on up-and-coming artists. He is considered to be one of the first artists from Northern California to explore the minimalist style and geometric abstraction.
