Later he moved to Columbus, Ohio, and was one of the first members of the Ohio Art League. Burkhart’s career included receiving two commissions from the WPA Federal Art Project to create murals at Central High School and at The Ohio State University, exhibiting, teaching, and traveling as an artist-in-residence with the International School of America. Known as an American Scene painter, over his career he used impressionist, post-impressionist, and realist styles in his work.
