Born on a farm near Kalida, Emerson Burkhart studied at Ohio Wesleyan University and then moved to New York City to study at the Art Student’s League. He later moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and took instruction from painter Charles Hawthorne (1872 – 1930). Later he moved to Columbus, Ohio, and was one of the first members of the Ohio Art League. Burkhart’s career included receiving two commissions from the WPA Federal Art Project to create murals at Central High School and at The Ohio State University, exhibiting, teaching, and traveling as an artist-in-residence with the International School of America. Known as an American Scene painter, over his career he used impressionist, post-impressionist, and realist styles in his work. He was known to create work showing disdain for excess and the progression as a disposable society, but also known for his portraits, city scenes of Columbus, and harbor seascapes.

Condition

- the artwork has been examined under UV light and shows no apparent signs of repairs; craquelure and light accretions to paint; small chips to the gesso accents and veneer of frame at the upper right corner; minor scratches and scuffs to frame; large tears to the paper backing at the verso of frame.
