Self-taught, Goodwin did not begin painting until the age of thirty. He was a follower of the Ashcan School and preferred urban subject matter. Known as the “Boston painter” his notable works are plein air depictions of Boston’s waterfront and street scenes. In 1921, Goodwin moved to New York City and maintained a studio in Washington Square. For nearly a decade, Goodwin composed scenes of urban life with an impromptu approach. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists and the St. Botolph Club. His paintings are shown at many institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Addison Gallery of Art, the Fogg Museum and more.
