Perhaps best known as a comedian for national radio and a television host, Red Skelton was also an aspiring artist for most of his career. Though he never received formal training, he began painting in the 1940s with the encouragement of his wife who had attended art school. Skelton’s first public art exhibition was alongside one of his comedic performances at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas (1964). Many of his works portray portraits of clowns, most likely because of his fondness and likeness to that of a clown. Skelton has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he received Emmy Awards for Best Comedy Program and Best Comedian, and his works of art are widely collected in public and private collections internationally.
