Chase was a Post-Impressionist painter best known for his Hudson River Valley style landscapes. During the early 1900s, Chase embarked on his artistic studies, alongside his brother Edward Leigh Chase (1884 – 1965), at the Art Students League and soon after, the Art League School of Landscape under L. Birge Harrison (1854 – 1929) and John Carlson (1875 – 1947). Known as “the dean of Nantucket artists,’ Chase became an influential teacher to many upcoming artists. He founded the Woodstock Artists Association, established the first art colony in Nantucket, and launched the Sarasota School of Art. Chase’s works are well-regarded and often exhibited.
