Born in New York, Charles Appel is known for his dark landscapes in Tonalist and Impressionistic styles. Appel became a pupil of Francis Luis Mora and William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and of Frank Vincent DuMond at The Art Students League. Even still, a great influence on his artistic style may have come specifically from the artist, George Inness. He became a member of the Salmagundi Club, New York City, in 1906. Appel’s work is featured in the collections of the L.A. County Museum of Art, the Montclair Art Museum, and more.
