Born in Ohio, Owen, better known as Cullen, is best known for his impressionist landscapes of Shawnee, Pennsylvania. He was accepted to the National Academy of Design at the age of 25 and became one of the first elected members in 1908. After his studies at the academy, he moved to the artist colony in Shinnecock Hills and trained under the American Impressionist painter William Merritt Chase. He continued to train at Ecole des Beaux-Art and Academy Julian in France. Instead of traveling Europe in 1900, Yates spent the summer at the Florence Griswold House in Old Lyme, Connecticut, becoming an early student of the Old Lyme art colony. He was an active member in numerous groups including the Salmagundi Club, New York Society of Painters, American Watercolor Society and other associations. His works are nationally collected and held in many public and private collections.
