Very Rare 1919 Booklet by Maria Longworth Storer on Rookwood and Music Festivals

Item Details

A very rare booklet written by Maria Longworth Storer titled ‘History of the Cincinnati Music Festivals and of the Rookwood Pottery’, published in Paris by Herbert Clarke in 1919. The twelve page booklet is printed on thick cream paper and bound with a bittersweet orange and gold marbled paper cover. It must be noted that the book is in pristine condition. and interestingly, the booklet describes the inception of the name ‘Rookwood’. The word had ‘pleasant associations in my memory’ reminding Maria of her father’s country place on Walnut Hill. Maria Longworth Storer (1849-1932) was born to a wealthy Cincinnati family, enjoying an education to include an appreciation of the arts. In 1871, she organized and raised the funding necessary to launch the still annually celebrated Cincinnati May Festival and in 1880 she founded the renowned Rookwood Pottery being the first woman to ever open such a shop. The famous Rookwood Pottery has employed dozens of well known artists, won many awards and is avidly collected today. Four further identical booklets are offered as item numbers 14CIN096-018 through 021.
