The Enraged Musician and The Distrest Poet, William Hogarth, 1822

Item Details

A lot of ‘The Enraged Musician’ and ‘The Distrest Poet’, both engravings by William Hogarth taken from the 1822 publication ‘The Works Of William Hogarth’, published in London by Baldwin and Cradock. ‘The Distrest Poet’ is the only known portrait of the poet and scholar Lewis Theobald, he is seated in a window well attempting to work with chaos surrounding him. ‘The Enraged Musician’ is a comical scene illustrating a classical violinist being driven mad by the chaotic merriment outside his window. William Hogarth (London 1697-1764) was known as the ‘Father of satirical art and moral paintings’, a genre heavily influenced by his middle class upbringing, he believed that art should possess both moral and aesthetic qualities. His work was immensely popular in 18th century England and the technological advances of the printing press made Hogarth’s engravings accessible to many who had never before owned art.
