A Pair of William Hogarth Engravings "Analysis of Beauty", 1822 Publication

Item Details

A pair of William Hogarth engravings taken from ‘The Works of William Hogarth’, published in London by Baldwin and Cradock, 1822. Both images are pleasing, titled to the top ‘Analysis of Beauty’ plate I and II. Plate I shows a various classic sculptures with small studies around the circumference while Plate II illustrates a scene of great merriment and dancing, again with smaller studies around the edge. In both plates, Hogarth shows exemplars of what he identified as the essence of beauty: ‘that sort of proportion’d, winding line, which will hereafter be call’d the precise serpentine line, or line of grace.’ William Hogarth (London 1697-1764) was known as the ‘Father of satirical art and moral paintings’, a genre heavily influenced by his middle class upbringing, he believed that art should possess both moral and aesthetic qualities. His work, showing full and complex compositions, was immensely popular in 18th century England and the technological advances of the printing press made his engravings widely accessible.
