A scarce first edition elephant folio in French titled ‘La Restauration D’Olympie. L’Histoire, Les Monuments, Le Culte et Les Fetes’ by Victor Laloux and Paul Monceaux, published as a limited edition of 200 in Paris, 1889, by Maison Quantin, this folio being numbered #150. As the title suggests, the large folio documents the history, monuments, cult and the festivities of the ancient city of Olympia as told by Victor Laloux (1850-1937). Victor Laloux was a Beaux Arts trained architect and teacher, writing this book early in his career was thought to catapult his success. He went on to be commissioned for much work most notably to include the Gare du Quai d’Orsay (now the Musee d’Orsay) with the barrel vaulted glass ceiling. The book is green clothbound with a gilt stamped title and includes 79 strong black and white illustrations. Toward the back of the book is a magnificent four panel fold out measuring 17’ high x 46’ long to illustrate the Temple of Zeus.

Condition

, extremities slight wear at edges and bumped corners. There is some foxing throughout, many of the images are in good condition.
