A lot of ‘The Ornamental Arts Of Japan’ by G.A. Audsley, published in 1883 by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, in two volumes with six parts in three elephant folios. The black clothbound covers are striking with a gilt stamped bird in flight over the full red sun. Rectangular paper labeling at the right top corner has the title written in Japanese. The exquisite and comprehensive volumes are considered to be the definitive work on Japanese art forms prior to 1900 with dozens of gold highlighted chromolithographs (by Lemercier & Cie, Paris) and hundreds of black and white plates. The nine sections are titled and refer to: Painting Embroidery, Textile Fabrics, Lacquer, Incrusted Work, Metal Work, Cloisonne Enamel, Modeling and Carving and Heraldry.

Condition
, to fair. Fair refers to the covers on two of the folios which are completely loose, all three have bumped corners. The interior pages are unbound as issued and are in good condition with little toning and no foxing. A detailed list of missing plates and text accompanies the set, approximately 34 plates and 36 pages of text are missing in total from both volumes.
