John T. Bowen was a preeminent lithographer, publisher, and artist in Philadelphia in the mid-19th century. He was born in England in 1801 and eventually moved to Philadelphia where he took over the publication of McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes. Bowen was especially praised during the 1830s and 1840s for his hand-colored lithography. Also at this time, he was printing for prominent artist John James Audubon’s Quadrupeds (1845-1848) and octavo edition of Birds of America (1839-1844) and published the Architect’s Magazine (1839). After 1844, Bowen primarily worked with Audubon and his sons on the reissuing of their natural history volumes. Bowen’s work can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Museum of Art, among others.
