1840 Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal Co. $3 Obsolete Currency Note. This $3 note was issued in September of 1840 in order to help raise money for the building of a canal that stretched from Harrison, Indiana to Cincinnati to carry freight and provide waterpower. The canal was finished in 1843 and remained in use until 1865 when rail lines overspread the region. The note has the handwritten serial number of #12051 and bears the signatures of Foote and Bonsall to the obverse and J.S. Olmsted to the reverse. The note appears circulated with light folds and light toning and a small tear to the upper right corner.
