Foster was an established engraver and watercolorist during the 19th century. He was born into a family of Quakers and his father founded a beer-bottling company, M.B. Fosters & Sons. After moving on from the family business, Fosters found work as an apprentice for Ebenzer Landells, as an engraver and illustrator of many publications including Illustrated London News and books by Henry Longfellow. By 1860, he was elected into the Royal Watercolor Society and exhibited with the group for over twenty years. Foster traveled frequently and created many charming genre scenes and landscapes of the countryside and romanticized leisure scenes.
