Charly Palmer is a celebrated artist working out of his studio in Atlanta, Georgia. He studied Art and Design at the American Academy of Art and School of the Art Institute in Chicago and works in a variety of artistic mediums and styles including graphic design, illustration, and fine arts. His work is inspired by African American history, the black narrative, personal experience, and the illustrations of Ezra Jack Keats – Palmer was mesmerized by Keats’ use of bold colors and geometric shapes. Palmer also works under his pseudonym “Carlos,” which gives him the freedom to explore a more primal, abstract, and spontaneous style in his work. The marriage of his artistic styles is most evident in his Civil Rights series. When he is not teaching at Spelman College, Palmer can be found illustrating his children’s books including Mama Africa, creating the cover for John Legend’s album Bigger Love, and being featured on the cover of TIME magazine’s American Must Change issue, which covered topics of racism in America. Palmer’s work is also privately collected by many Fortune 500 companies and the late Maya Angelou.
