Modernist photographer Soichi was especially known for his photographs of modern dancers such as Ruth St Denis, Agnes De Mille, Helen Tamiris, Martha Graham. Born in Japan, Sunami emigrated to the United States in 1905 and worked for the photographer Ella E. McBride in Seattle. In 1922, he moved to New York City and worked for photographer Nickolas Muray before studying at the Art Students League with Alexander Calder under the tutelage of Ashcan artist John Sloan. Sunami worked as the main archival photographer at the Museum of Modern Art for almost forty years. Some admirers of his work include Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and Natalie Hay Hammond. Throughout his career, he produced some of the most important photographic series of dance photography including some of the only known images of the early black modern dancer, Edna Guy. His photographs appeared in multiple national and international publications and have been exhibited and collected by several institutions such as the Getty Museum and the Cascadia Art Museum.
