Son of German immigrants, John Hauser was raised in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati, Ohio; he studied drawing at the Ohio Mechanics’ Institute and enrolled in 1973 at the McMicken School of Design (later the Art Academy of Cincinnati) under the tutelage of Thomas Noble. Throughout the 1880’s he traveled in Europe with fellow Cincinnati artist Joseph Henry Sharp, attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich during this time. In 1890, Hauser was one of the first members of the Cincinnati Art Club and in 1891 made his first trip to the American West with Sharp, beginning his life-long passion for portraying Native American subjects. Hauser spent months at a time living with the Lakota Sioux tribe at Pine Ridge, and he and his wife were eventually adopted by the nation; the artist was given the tribal name “Straight White Shield”. His work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Joslyn Art Museum, and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, to name a few.
