Additional Information Joseph F. Field served as a private, sergeant and his final rank, lieutenant, from 1862-1865. He served in the 46th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 2nd Massachusetts Artillery Regiment. The lot includes personal letters, invitations, notes and sales invoices. Some years noted range from 1863 to the late 1880s. Another small collection of his letters can be found at the University of Michigan’s Clements Library.This selection includes non-military letters, such as a 1669-1869 BI-CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS four page flyer that Joseph used to write a letter to Millie Chapman. In addition, remnants of empty envelopes that Joseph used are present.

- conditions vary; folds, stains and discoloration; some of the letters have faded; small tears; some letters may not be complete; foxing and toning to paper, chipped and worn edges
