Angela Adele McElwain is an award-winning contemporary artist who works in acrylic, collage and found objects to creative evocative paintings and sculptures. She was a student of Lenore Rundle Szesko and studied at the College of DuPage, Northeastern Illinois University where she received her B.A. in Art and Literature, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Especially known for her assembled Constructs which she describes as refined chaos, McElwain states that she seeks out tactile objects for her compositions. She particularly enjoys working with lead due to its contrary qualities, explaining that as a plastic metal, “the surface is beautiful yet marred, the greyness is industrial yet strangely comfortable”. Her sculptural work conveys a closed and isolated environment which examines the loss of innocence, freedom or articulates a foreboding about personal, environmental, social or political choices. Her paintings are vibrant and mystical works exploring the use of color to evoke a mood.

Throughout her career, McElwain has received many awards for her work and has exhibited at numerous institutions and exhibition spaces including the Elmhurst Art Museum, the Norris Art Gallery at the Norris Cultural Center and the Chicago Art Guild among others. In addition, she has illustrated the graphic novel Dead Cops Detective Bureau. Her studio is currently located in Chicago.
