Two Antique Framed Cassell Lithographs of Famous Chickens (Circa 1871)

Item Details

Two antique framed Cassell lithographs of famous chickens (circa 1871), published by Cassell & Company Ltd., London, England. The prints, inside attractive gilt wood frames with exquisite white matting, feature six of the world’s most famous types of chickens: the Cochin, an Asian chicken imported to the United States from Shanghai, China, during the 19th century; a dark Brahman, a large breed developed in the United States after having been imported from Shanghai; and the Malay, the tallest of all chicken breeds standing as high as 26’. Malays, which originated in Pakistan, can be seen in paintings dating to the 1400s. Print two depicts the Golden-Spangled Polish, beautiful tame fowls with full crests; the Spanish chicken, believed to be the oldest breed of fowl in the Mediterranean class. The British have records dating to 1572 referencing this breed; the White-Coated Black Polish, known for its crest of feathers. The oldest accounts of these birds are from the Netherlands, although the breed could have been named for the country of Poland.
