Second Edition (1858) "Piccoli Bronzi Del Real Museo Borbonico", By Carlo Ceci

Item Details

A very rare second edition (1858) paperbound copy of ‘Piccoli Bronzi Del real Museo Borbonico’ by Carlo Ceci and published in Naples by Stamp di S. Piscopo. A fabulous catalog documenting small bronze objects excavated in Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Interestingly, Ceci (who was the curator of the Real Meseum Borbonico) doesn’t focus on where the items were uncovered but he groups the objects according to their function. The large format booklet includes a chromolithograph illustrating excavators in Naples and fourteen further pages of colored lithographs, done by Dolfino, showing the drawn objects. The text labeling and describing the objects being written in both French and Italian. The booklet also has an interesting provenance, the front cover is signed by Cincinnati artist John Rettig with a pencil notation stating it to have been a gift to the museum in 1932.

  • This item is Ex-Libris, having been stored in a climate controlled facility and is being auctioned to benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum Library.

Condition

, the cover is detached and the booklet is frayed and torn at the edges however the colored lithographs remain clear and colorful (definitely salvageable). The corners of the first few pages are chipped and there is some slight age toning but little to no foxing.
