Sixteen Original Folios "Types et Uniformes L'Armee Francaise", E. Detaille 1885

An amazing collection of the 16 original installments of ‘Types et Uniformes, L’Armee Francaise’ by Edouard Detaille with text by Jules Richard, published in Paris, Boussod, Valadon Et Cie, Editeurs, 1885-1889. Each installment is an over-sized imperial folio, presented in a marvelous case with marbled boards, quarter bound then with gray/green cloth at the spine and corners. The title page to each volume is printed in red and black with large armorial vignettes, in total there are 300 line drawings and 20 marvelous colored plates by Detaille. Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille (French 1848-1912) was an academic painter who grew up in a prosperous military family, his grandfather being an arms supplier to Napoleon. His paintings are appreciated for the accurate attention to detail and the work is considered to be an important source for 19th century military history for Detaille was considered to be the ‘Artist of the French Army’. The folios comprise; (1) Generaux, Etats Majors, Ecoles, (2 & 3) ‘Infanterie de Lignel’, (4) ‘Infanterie Ligne et Chasseurs’, (5, 6, 7, & 8) ‘Cavalerie’, (9 & 10) ‘Armee d Afriquel’, (11) ‘Artillerie’, (12) ‘Geniel’, (13) ‘Gendarmerie’, (14, 15& 16 are in one folder) ‘Administration’, ‘Troupes de la Marine’ and ‘Tilres et Tables’.
- This item is Ex-Libris, having been stored in a climate controlled facility and is being auctioned to benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum Library.
Condition
, in general. Two of the outer marbled folio case are missing but all 16 installments are present. The color plates and interior pages are in good condition, near very good with little discoloration and little to no foxing. All the folio case are intact with minor rub wear and bumped corners.
