Item Details

A first edition, two folio volumes titled ‘Grand Modern Paintings, A Collection Of One Hundred Photogravures, Fac-Similes Of The Most Famous Paintings Of Europe’, published by Haskell Publishing Co., Boston, 1888 and 1890. A rare and seldom offered treasury of European art, both folio volumes are fully leather bound with blind embossing, gold gilt titles on the front boards, gilt and tooled dentelles and gilt page edges. The first volume is dated 1888 with the second volume being published in 1890, both contain 100 full page tipped in tissue photogravures. The books are an assemblage of the works of great artists and more importantly ‘Special prominence is given…to the study of those schools which are less known in modern art, in order that a wider understanding of the artistic development of the present may be understood’ as stated in the preface by Haskell. He goes on to state two special features of the volumes to include a complete sense of Russian art and the presentation of the great 17th and 18th century military paintings.
