A lot of ‘The Grammar Of Ornament’ by Owen Jones, published by Bernard Quaritch, 15 Piccadilly, London 1868. The deep red cloth bound folio has beveled edges with a beautifully ornate gilt stamped title plate on the front cover and spine. Owen Jones (English 1809-1874) was a versatile architect and designer, renowned for his use of color and flat patterning that was greatly influenced by his studies of Islamic decorative art at the Alhambra. He also pioneered new standards in chromolithography and was an important figure in the formation of the South Kensington Museum (later to become the V&A). His style, being bold, geometric and abstract is unique to the 19th century. The book comprises 112 fabulous chromolithographic color plates that are just delightful to peruse as well as important documentation.

  • This item is Ex-Libris, having been stored in a climate controlled facility and is being auctioned to benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum Library.

Condition

The cover shows very slight rub wear however the binding is loose. All pages appear to be present and the chromolithographs are very vibrant with little toning and no foxing.
