Lawrence Nelson Wilbur was born in Whitman, Massachusetts. He began his formal artistic training in photo-engraving in Boston and traveled back and forth between there and Los Angeles before settling in New York to pursue a career in art. He attended Grand Central Art School and studied under Harvey Dunn, Pruett Carter, and N. C. Wyeth. He worked for a number of print shops in New York as a photo-engraving finisher. His proficiency in graphic art skills paired with his studious practice of fine art ensured his success as a respected draftsman, painter, and printmaker. He was an active member of the Salmagundi Club of New York, the Painters and Sculptors Society of New Jersey, and the Society of America Graphic Artists. Wilbur’s works are represented in the permanent collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among many others.
