An original watercolor on paper painting by well listed Ohioan artist Fred Pye (1882 – 1964). According to the label on the verso this painting is entitled ‘La Porte de Mares Grasse, A-P, France.’ Pye has painted an image that’s intensely attractive, impressionistically articulate. ‘Fred Pye was born in Hebden Bridge Yorkshire, England on December 1 1882 and died September 29th 1964. He attended the Julian Academy and Colorossi Academy in Paris. Shortly after completing his work at the Academy he held an exhibition wherein the French Government purchased one of his paintings entitled Mer Agiteo. The receipt for the purchase is dated December 23rd 1926 (via aksart).’ This painting is exemplary of the high quality watercolors the artist was capable of producing. The architectural subject the artist has found in the archway is a chance meeting beautifully preserved herein, the spirit of French country life expressed with profound consideration. The Painting is signed by the artist to the lower right hand corner, and presented in a beautifully embellished gilt wood frame with a single blue bordered mat to edge.
