Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dixie Selden was a notable Impressionist painter. Selden studied painting and drawing under her mentor Frank Duvenck at the McMicken School of Design, now known as the Art Academy of Cincinnati. With Duveneck’s endorsement, she began to exhibit at the Covington Art Club in 1890 and was honored for her landscapes and portraits. Within two years, her works were shown next to work by renowned artists such as Edward Henry Potthast, Charles Henry Sharp, Henry Farny, and more. Selden was instrumental in establishing the Women’s Art Club of Cincinnati and served as its president. As a world-traveler, she captured landscapes and genre scenes of the country she visited. She was an active member of multiple art associations and leagues. Her paintings are held in national collections such as the New York Academy of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and of course, Cincinnati Art Museum.

- artwork shows signs of repair under UV light, including visible inpainting throughout as well as a possible patch to the canvas at the lower center region of the painting; craquelure, accretions, light discoloration, and scuffing to paint; minor indentations to canvas where the painting presses against the interior border of stretchers; light scratching, scuffing, and loose debris to frame.
