Shields was a recognized American painter, printmaker, and sculptor. After studying at the Kansas State University, he earned his first solo exhibition at the Dorry Gates Gallery, Missouri. Regular exhibitions followed regionally in New York. Best known for his abstract collages and grid-like compositions, Shields worked in a variety of techniques, often in one object. Many of his works are held in important collections such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Modern Art, and more.
